The right tablecloth size comes from two measurements: the tabletop and the amount of fabric you want hanging over each edge. Use the calculator and charts below to find a practical fit for round, rectangular, square, and oval dining tables.

Compare the available shapes, sizes, fabrics, and care instructions before ordering.
Browse tablecloths on AmazonThe tablecloth sizing formula
For each tabletop dimension, add the desired drop twice:
Example: a 60 × 36-inch table with a 10-inch drop needs a tablecloth measuring about 80 × 56 inches.
A drop of 6–10 inches is practical for everyday meals. A 12–15-inch drop feels dressier. For a floor-length cloth, measure from the tabletop to the floor—usually close to 30 inches—and add that measurement twice. Check that a longer cloth will not catch on knees, chair arms, pets, or busy walkways.

Round tablecloth size chart
Match a round table with a round cloth for the most even drop. If the exact calculated size is unavailable, choose the nearest size and check the resulting drop before buying.
| Table diameter | 8-inch everyday drop | 15-inch formal drop | 30-inch floor drop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36 in | 52 in round | 66 in round | 96 in round |
| 42 in | 58 in round | 72 in round | 102 in round |
| 48 in | 64 in round | 78 in round | 108 in round |
| 54 in | 70 in round | 84 in round | 114 in round |
| 60 in | 76 in round | 90 in round | 120 in round |
| 72 in | 88 in round | 102 in round | 132 in round |
Rectangular tablecloth size chart
Add the drop to both ends and both long sides. A cloth does not need to match the table proportions perfectly, but noticeably different drops at the ends and sides can look accidental.
| Table size | 8-inch everyday drop | 15-inch formal drop | 30-inch floor drop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 × 48 in | 46 × 64 in | 60 × 78 in | 90 × 108 in |
| 36 × 60 in | 52 × 76 in | 66 × 90 in | 96 × 120 in |
| 36 × 72 in | 52 × 88 in | 66 × 102 in | 96 × 132 in |
| 40 × 84 in | 56 × 100 in | 70 × 114 in | 100 × 144 in |
| 42 × 96 in | 58 × 112 in | 72 × 126 in | 102 × 156 in |
Square and oval tables
Square tables
Use the same formula for both dimensions. A 48-inch square table with a 10-inch drop needs a 68-inch square cloth. A round cloth can create a softer look on a square table, but its shortest drop will appear at the midpoint of each side and its longest drop at the corners.
Oval tables
Measure the oval at its widest and longest points, then add the drop twice to each measurement. An oval cloth follows the edge most evenly. A rectangular cloth can work for everyday use, although the corner drops will be longer than the drops along the curved sides.
How to measure before ordering
- Clear the tabletop. Measure the hard top rather than an existing cloth.
- Measure through the center. For round tables, take the diameter across the widest point. For oval tables, record the maximum width and length.
- Extend the table first. If leaves will be used, measure with them installed and decide whether you need a second cloth for the smaller everyday size.
- Choose the drop. Hold a tape measure down from the edge to see where 8, 10, or 15 inches will finish against the chairs.
- Calculate both dimensions. Add twice the drop to every tabletop measurement.
Choose a fabric you will actually use
- Soft texture suits everyday and dressed-up settings.
- Natural fibres may shrink and crease, so check washing instructions.
- Blends often need less ironing than pure linen.
- Useful for children, frequent meals, and outdoor dining.
- Spills are easier to wipe before they soak through.
- Some coated surfaces feel firmer and may drape less naturally.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best tablecloth drop for everyday dining?
About 6–10 inches is a practical range. It covers the table edge without placing much fabric on diners’ laps. Test the drop against chair arms and knees before choosing a size.
Should I size up or down if the exact size is unavailable?
Calculate the drop each option will create. A slightly longer drop usually looks more intentional than one that barely covers the edge, but avoid fabric that pools on the floor or interferes with chairs.
What size tablecloth fits a 60-inch round table?
A 76-inch round cloth gives an 8-inch drop, a 90-inch cloth gives a 15-inch drop, and a 120-inch cloth reaches the floor on a table about 30 inches high.
Do tablecloths shrink?
Some cotton and linen cloths can shrink. Read the care instructions and product notes before buying. If shrinkage is expected, a small amount of extra drop may be helpful, but do not guess—follow the manufacturer’s guidance.

Method note: The chart values use the standard sizing formula described in SFERRA’s tablecloth measuring guide: add the desired drop twice to each tabletop measurement. Always compare the result with the sizes, fabric composition, and care instructions on the current product listing.
